Take-Two CEO pushes back on AI hype, says hit games still need human creativity

The debate around AI in gaming is not slowing down, but Strauss Zelnick has made his stance clear. The Take-Two Interactive boss believes AI can help developers, just not in the way some expect.

Speaking in a recent interview, Zelnick explained that AI tools are useful for speeding up development. They can help build assets, save time, and reduce workload. But that is where the impact mostly ends. According to him, making a successful game still depends on human input.

Take-Two boss pointed out that it does not matter how an asset is made. Whether it takes weeks or just a button press, it is still just one part of a much bigger process.

AI can assist, but it cannot replace creativity, says Take-Two boss

Zelnick stressed that creating a hit is far more complex than generating content. Big titles like Grand Theft Auto VI or NBA 2K require vision, teamwork, and strong creative direction. AI cannot replicate that level of execution.

He also dismissed the idea that tools like Project Genie could suddenly make game development easy for everyone. The industry already has advanced tools, yet only a small number of games become major successes.

In his view, the idea that someone could press a button and create a global hit is simply unrealistic. He compared AI-generated content to novelty items, interesting at first, but not something people return to.

For now, AI remains a helpful tool, not the driving force behind gaming’s biggest wins.
