Brainlag Games, a German studio founded by ex-Piranha Bytes developers in 2024, has announced Rootbound, a physics-based action-adventure game set to launch on PC via Steam in 2026.
A plantling’s journey through a world in decay
Rootbound follows a small plantling on a mission to save its home from a creeping blight. Armed with a sentient backpack, players will explore a handcrafted island, solve ancient puzzles, battle monsters, and uncover the secrets of a lost civilization.

- Explore Akara – Every corner of this handcrafted world holds secrets. Discover the fate of the island’s ancient rulers and harness their lost technology to aid your journey. Solve puzzles to unlock weapons and upgrades for the trials ahead.
- Your living backpack – More than just storage, your backpack has a mind of its own, collecting items and tossing them to you—if it feels like it. But beware, enemies may notice its sentience and attack it.
- Harness the light – Crystals scattered across Akara power campfires and torches. Campfires let you rest and craft, while torches illuminate dark areas and may even grant magical powers.
- Fear the rain – The mysterious blight spreads through the rain at night. Only campfires and torches can protect you. Venturing out unprotected is dangerous.
- Survive the void – Dangerous enemies and enigmatic survivors roam the land, some in need of aid. Choose who to help and decide if their cause is worth your time.
