Obsidian Entertainment is revisiting one of its most beloved worlds, and this time it’s letting fans take control, one turn at a time. The studio has announced a new public beta for Pillars of Eternity, adding the much-requested turn-based mode that first appeared in Deadfire. The beta goes live on 5th November 2025 and is open to everyone.
Pillars of Eternity – Turn-Based Mode Beta announcement trailer
For those who remember the original, Pillars of Eternity was Obsidian’s love letter to Baldur’s Gate, bringing classic-style RPGs back to life. Now, it’s getting a major update that lets players freely switch between real-time and turn-based combat. According to Obsidian, the mode has been fine-tuned to feel faster and smoother than before, addressing the issues from Deadfire’s version.

It’s been a big year for the studio, with Grounded and The Outer Worlds 2 keeping players busy, but this update proves Obsidian hasn’t forgotten its roots. There’s no official word on Pillars of Eternity 3 yet, but with Microsoft now behind the team, anything’s possible. For now, this beta is a great excuse to head back to Eora and see the world in a whole new rhythm.
