Square Enix has announced Octopath Traveler 0, a new prequel in the HD-2D RPG series, during the July Nintendo Direct. It launches on 4 December 2025 for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox, Steam, and the Microsoft Store.
The game is set in the world of Orsterra, the story begins in the quiet town of Wishvale, which is destroyed early on. Players will step into a custom-made protagonist and set out on a journey of restoration and retribution. Along the way, you’ll confront villains and rebuild your hometown from the ground up.
Fully custom characters and a large cast
For the first time in the series, players can create their character, choosing their look, voice, movement style, and even favourite food. You’ll be able to recruit from over 30 characters, each with unique traits and roles.
The game retains the series’ signature HD-2D visuals, blending pixel art with modern lighting and depth. From the initial footage, the presentation looks more refined than past entries.

Octopath Traveler 0 is designed as a standalone prequel, meaning newcomers can start here without needing to play the earlier games. It also marks the first time the series is launching simultaneously across all platforms.
