Mortal Shell 2 finally gets its first gameplay trailer, here’s everything we saw

Cold Symmetry has finally pulled back the curtain on Mortal Shell 2, dropping the first proper gameplay trailer for its upcoming souls-like sequel, and if you were worried the studio might stray too far from what made the original work, you can breathe easy.

The footage introduces three playable Shells: Tiel the Acolyte, Eredrim the Venerable, and Proxima the Broodseeker. Each one brings a distinct approach to combat, giving players meaningful reasons to experiment rather than just defaulting to whoever feels strongest early on.

A familiar world, built differently

The action takes place across Fallgrim, though don’t expect the tight, claustrophobic corridors of the 2020 original. Mortal Shell 2 is going full open-world this time around, with Cold Symmetry promising more than 60 dungeons scattered across the map. Crucially, the studio says the world is deliberately compact a pointed nod to respecting players’ time in an era where open worlds can feel like homework.

The series’ signature Shell mechanic returns, too. Dormant warrior forms are hidden throughout Fallgrim, and discovering one lets you awaken and possess it to unlock new abilities. Cold Symmetry has also confirmed Mortal Shell 2 is a standalone sequel, so no prior knowledge is needed to jump straight in.

No firm release date has been set yet, but publisher Playstack has announced a PS5-exclusive collector’s edition bundled with an art book, steelbook cover, and limited-edition fine art prints.

Preorders are live now for both the collector’s and standard physical versions, with the game targeting a 2025 release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
