Metal Gear Solid series may return with new games and bold remakes

The future of Metal Gear Solid is not locked in yet, but it looks like Konami is open to almost anything. Series producer Noriaki Okamura has hinted that the next steps could include brand-new games and more remakes, though nothing is certain for now.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater brought the series back into the spotlight this year. When speaking to Real Sound, Okamura said he wants to continue working on the franchise, but the direction forward will depend on what fits each game. He explained that the remake style used for Snake Eater won’t work for every title. Each game has its own identity, so every remake needs its own plan.

This also suggests that the early 8-bit Metal Gear titles may not get full 3D remakes, since the Delta method is not suitable for all projects. And for now, most mainline entries are already easy to play on modern systems through remasters or backward compatibility.

The big exception is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

It remains stuck on the PlayStation 3. Okamura noted that the PS3’s difficult hardware forced the team to create very complex code at the time. Updating that code for today’s hardware would be a major technical challenge. Still, fans have been hoping for a modern version for years, and signs suggest it might appear in a future Master Collection Vol. 2.

If that happens, players may finally get to experience the end of Solid Snake’s story without digging out old hardware. For now, the future is uncertain, but it sounds like Okamura and his team are exploring every path to bring Metal Gear to more players in new and exciting ways.
