Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order Launches this Summer

by MaddOx

The latest Nintendo Direct announcement revealed some exciting new information about the upcoming Nintendo Switch exclusive Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order. A brand new trailer features more gameplay footage, while also revealing a summer release window for the title. The game will see Marvel favourites like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, go up against supervillain Thanos and his five henchmen known collectively as the Black Order.

Fans might remember that the game was first announced at the Game Awards 2018 held just last December, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is the long-awaited third entry in the franchise. The previous game had been released over a decade ago in 2008 for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, Wii, and Xbox 360. The upcoming sequel is developed by Team Ninja, the same studio behind Ninja Gaiden and the Nioh games.

The Marvel Ultimate Alliance games allow players to select teams of 4 heroes from more than 20 playable characters, some of which need to be unlocked by progressing through the game. In The Black Order, a new feature is introduced wherein players can go for a 4-player online co-op. The trailer also reveals the addition of Captain Marvel, Iron Fist, Venom, and Storm to the roster of playable superheroes — and just in time, too, with these characters currently enjoying newly released films and TV series surrounding them. Moreover, IGN has since listed down all the confirmed playable characters so far.

All in all, Marvel is slowly rebuilding its presence in the video game world after a slew of disappointing console and PC titles in the past several years. For instance, 2017’s Marvel VS Capcom: Infinite felt noticeably incomplete and lackluster without the presence of any X-Men characters. Thankfully, the PlayStation 4 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man by Insomniac Games received rave reviews and was even nominated for Game of the Year at the Game Awards 2018. Gamers are also anticipating more news about the untitled triple A Avengers game by Crystal Dynamics

On the bright side, however, Marvel is doing splendidly in gaming at a smaller scale. In mobile games, titles like Contest of Champions, Future Fight, and Strike Force are very popular among fans. Some gamers, like Efase of Parallax Media, may complain about the games’ microtransactions, but Marvel is nevertheless profiting from those players who actually purchase in-game items with real money. Other companies have also developed games that are heavily inspired by Marvel characters. Games like Thunderstruck and Thunderstruck 2, which can be found on the online portal Slingo, are an obvious tribute to Marvel’s Thor. The likeness seems intentional as the company aims to draw in Marvel’s huge fan base, along with more related titles like Black Widow. This just goes to show the company’s strong hold on the smaller games’ market today.

For those who missed it, Nintendo previously explained the reason behind the decision to make Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 exclusive. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime explains that it had a lot to do with the change in developers. Koei Tecmo (which Team Ninja is a part of) has handled the development of Switch exclusives Fire Emblem Warriors and Hyrule Warriors.

What happens in the world of development is you have companies who have positive experiences in working together, coupled with franchises being available, and the franchise owner wanting to do something with a particular franchise. And in this case, those three elements came together in order to create the opportunity for that game.

Um…..are you aware of the fact that you’re posting old news? This isn’t new. Why are you just reporting this now? You’re a bit late.

We know a lot of this was announced a while back, but it wasn’t something we had covered and we were just making sure some of our regular site visitors didn’t miss out on the news. Plus it’s always nice to have a reminder about certain things in case you forget. God knows how terrible my memory is.
