Jason Blundell isn’t done yet. Just over a week after Dark Outlaw Games shut its doors, the former Treyarch veteran has announced the formation of yet another new studio, MagicFractal.
The announcement came during an appearance on colleague JCbackfire’s stream, though details on what MagicFractal is actually working on remain thin on the ground. That’s hardly surprising given how freshly formed the studio is, but it hasn’t stopped people from asking the obvious question: why is he doing this again?

Third Time’s the Charm
Blundell’s answer was short, self-aware, and hard not to smile at. “Third time’s the charm,” he said. “And if not, it’s the fourth time.”
It’s a characteristically candid response from someone who’s had a rough run since departing Treyarch in 2020. Both Deviation Games and Dark Outlaw Games failed to ship a single title, making MagicFractal his third shot at independent development.

Following Dark Outlaw Games‘ closure, Blundell teased that the game he’d been working on wasn’t a live service title and that it would have had fans “very excited.” Whether any of that work carries over into MagicFractal remains to be seen.
For now, it’s early days. But if determination counts for anything, Blundell clearly has it in spades.
