Hollow Knight Silksong took 6 years to make – Team Cherry confirms DLC already in development

Speaking to Jason Schreier, studio co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen admitted the delay wasn’t due to development hell. Instead, they just kept adding more. “We’ve been having fun,” said Pellen. “It’s nice to make fun things,” Gibson added that the team never hit a wall, but every new idea meant more work to polish.

The small team size also slowed progress. Unlike bigger studios, Team Cherry never expanded massively. Gibson noted the world grew to rival or even exceed the first Hollow Knight, complete with towns, a quest system, and a huge map.

Financial pressure wasn’t a problem either. With over 15 million copies of Hollow Knight sold, Team Cherry had freedom to take its time. In fact, the last two years have been spent solely on polishing and bug fixing.

As for reviews, don’t expect them at launch. The studio won’t send out early codes, saying it wouldn’t be fair to Kickstarter backers.

Hollow Knight: Silksong launches September 4, 2025, on PC and consoles.
