If you’re the kind of player who spends an hour “just tidying up the base” and somehow ends up designing an airship with a rooftop garden, Guardians of the Wild Sky has just given you a very good reason to jump back in.
Developer Blue Isle Studios has rolled out a newly updated demo for Guardians of the Wild Sky as part of Steam Next Fest, with a clear focus on making building more flexible, more shareable, and a lot more community-driven.
New foundation parts for sturdier builds
The biggest practical change is the addition of new structural foundation pieces, including wood and stone options. The goal is pretty straightforward: better stability and more freedom when you’re piecing together anything from a small outpost to something a bit more… ambitious in the sky.
An exclusive reward for Guardians of the Wild Sky Next Fest players
Anyone who plays the demo during Steam Next Fest can unlock an exclusive in-game item: the Majestic Sea Whale commemorative plaque. It’s essentially a little “you were here early” badge for players who take to the skies during the festival window.

Community building contest with permanent in-game schematics
This is the bit we love: Blue Isle Studios is running a limited-time building contest, and winning entries won’t just get a shout-out. The top builds will be turned into permanent, learnable schematics in the final game, sold by an in-game merchant, with creators credited on their designs. Winners will also receive a game key at launch and invitations to future playtests.
The contest has three categories:
- Best Flying Vessel
- Best Compact Design
- Best Creative Design
There are a few guardrails to keep things usable (including a suggested cap of around 350 pieces for large airships), and submissions go through Discord via the #building-contest channel with a screenshot and blueprint code.
What you can play in the demo right now
If you’re new to Guardians of the Wild Sky, the demo is designed as a solid slice of the core loop: survival, exploration, creature companionship, crafting, and airship-building. It supports single-player and online co-op for up to 10 players, uses custom worlds with an eight-hour play window per world, and includes progression up to level 20 with multiple islands to explore once you’ve got an airship up and running.
The full game itself is currently listed as “coming soon” on Steam.
