Glen Schofield may be done directing games after cancelled horror project

Glen Schofield, the man behind Dead Space, may not direct another game. He shared the update on LinkedIn, saying his next project is cancelled.

Schofield had been working on a new horror idea with his daughter. It was meant to create a new sub-genre. They needed $17 million. The best offers they got were between $2 and $5 million. So, they walked away.

“Some ideas are better left untouched than done cheap,” he said.

Glen Schofield’s work changed horror games

Dead Space pushed the genre forward. It cut out on-screen clutter. Health and ammo were shown through the suit and weapons. It felt natural. Schofield was the creative lead. His work helped define modern survival horror.

But now, things are different. Even someone with his history can’t secure the funding. “It’s tough out there,” he wrote. He also said AAA feels far away right now.

The game he and Nicole were planning is gone. The team is now looking for jobs. Glen Schofield still loves making games. But he’s not sure he’ll direct again.

“Maybe I’ve directed my last game.”

It’s a rough moment for the industry. Studios are cutting staff. Projects are getting canned. And many games feel the same.

Still, there’s hope in smaller titles. Games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 show that strong ideas can still shine. Whether Schofield returns or not, his mark on horror games won’t fade.
