It turns out Gears of War: E-Day wasn’t always the plan, at least according to the man who played JD Fenix.
Liam McIntyre, the voice actor behind James Dominic Fenix in Gears of War 4 and Gears 5, has revealed on social media that a sixth mainline entry was at one point being discussed internally at The Coalition before the studio ultimately pivoted to the upcoming prequel.
Gears 6 was “suggested”
Responding to fan questions on X, McIntyre was candid about what could have been. “We did Gears 4 and 5, and there was a suggestion that maybe there would be a Gears 6,” he wrote. “But the team wanted to try something new, as I understand it. And honestly, it looks great. Can’t wait to play.”

Despite not completing the trilogy, McIntyre made it clear he has no hard feelings and hopes The Coalition eventually returns to those story threads. “I hope they go back to it, but I love those guys and just want them to make a game they feel nails the Gears experience everyone loves.”
What about JD’s fate?
One of the lingering issues heading into any Gears 6 is the branching ending of Gears 5, which lets players choose between saving JD or his friend Del, leaving the canon unresolved. McIntyre even pitched his own cheeky solution: Del is the canonical survivor, Marcus goes rogue after losing his son, and JD gets revived and controlled by the Swarm. “His dad has to fight him. But somehow you save him. Not sure how yet. Or if it matters lol.”
Gears of War: E-Day is set to receive a dedicated showcase following the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2026.
