EA says no to $80 games for now, as Battlefield 6 reveal nears

With Battlefield 6’s multiplayer reveal set for 31 July and preorders expected to open the same day, many are watching to see if EA will raise the price to $80 (£62). For now, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

EA holds pricing steady

Speaking during an earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said, “We’re not looking to make any changes on pricing at this stage.” He pointed to EA’s existing mix of free-to-play, paid, and deluxe releases as a broad pricing model that already offers flexibility.

Wilson said;

“We’ll continue to look at opportunities to deliver great value to our players… but no dramatic changes planned yet.”

The comments follow a European retail leak suggesting Battlefield 6’s standard edition could be priced at €80 ($94 / £73), though EA hasn’t confirmed anything. If preorders do go live on 31 July, pricing should be revealed then.

Other publishers test higher prices

So far, Nintendo is the only major publisher to charge $80 for a standard game, doing so with Mario Kart World earlier this year. It was also included in a $500 Switch 2 bundle.

Microsoft had plans to price The Outer Worlds 2 at $80, but later dropped the idea.

According to analysts, publishers are aware that players are willing to pay more and will raise prices when they believe they can. While base prices might stay below $80, deluxe editions and microtransactions often push the actual cost far higher. Battlefield 6 is expected to include those as well.

Meanwhile, 2K Games is launching Mafia: The Old Country this August for $50 (£39).

Take-Two says the lower price is to attract more players, and 2K notes the game’s shorter length and linear design make it a better fit for that price.

Battlefield 6’s price will be clear soon enough, but for now, EA is keeping things where they are.
