The Dark Outlaw Games shutdown is already one of the more frustrating stories this year. The studio, formed by Sony just last year, has been closed before it could even release its first game.
According to studio head Jason Blundell, the team was working on something special. Speaking in a livestream, he said they were making “a hell of a game” and that players would have been “very excited” to play it.
That stings even more when you realise the project wasn’t chasing trends.

Dark Outlaw Games shutdown hits non-live service project
As shared by former developer JCbackfire, the cancelled title was not a live service game. That alone makes it stand out, especially with how many big publishers are pushing ongoing models.
The team clearly believed in what they were building. But despite that, Sony reportedly shifted direction, calling it a “strategic adjustment” for long-term stability.
Blundell didn’t sound bitter. If anything, he seemed proud of the work and the team behind it.
Still, this is another reminder of how quickly things can change. A promising project is gone, and players never even got a proper look at it.
For now, “the best game is the one you’ve never played” feels a bit too real.
