Capcom’s RE Engine has powered everything from Resident Evil 7 to Street Fighter 6, but with Pragmata, the studio encountered an unexpected challenge: hair. Specifically, the flowing locks of Diana, the game’s deuteragonist, forced the team to tweak its tech in ways it hadn’t before.
Re-engine gets a hair upgrade for Pragmata
Speaking with VGC, producer Naoto Oyama revealed that the tech powering every Capcom release since Resident Evil 7 was originally better suited for shorter hairstyles. “Diana’s hair is one example of something that we’ve finally been able to do with Pragmata,” he said, noting that the RE Engine team had to create new tools specifically for it. Oyama laughed when asked if this means we might see zombies with equally glamorous locks in future titles, saying only, “It’s hard to say.”

Originally unveiled back in 2020, Pragmata has been delayed multiple times, including an indefinite pushback after missing its 2023 target. Five years later, it’s finally back on track with a planned 2026 release, though no exact date has been set.
When it does arrive, you can expect to see Capcom’s tech showcase in action on PS5, Xbox, and PC – with Diana’s hair quietly marking a milestone in the engine’s evolution.
