Marathon launched earlier this month after a six-month delay, and while the critical reception has been solid, the sales picture is a little more complicated.
Bungie’s extraction shooter reboot landed with an 81 on Metacritic and a very positive 88% rating on Steam from over 25,000 user reviews. Of the 1.2 million units sold so far, though, 800K came from Steam -PlayStation 5 accounted for just 217K, with Xbox Series S and X trailing at 133K, leaving some fans questioning the game’s longevity.

Marathon’s studio Bungie isn’t going anywhere
Bungie addressed those concerns directly in Marathon’s official PC performance guide, stating they’re “in it for the long haul” and committed to “many years of steady improvements.” Frame generation support is also being evaluated, though CPU performance improvements will take priority first.
Ultimately, Marathon’s fate rests with parent company Sony Interactive Entertainment, which has already cancelled several live service projects in recent years. That said, the launch is far from a disaster, and plenty of live service games have found their footing well after release.
